๐Ÿ“Š Letโ€™s Start With the Facts โ€” Protein in the Modern World

Most people today are not protein deficient. In fact, the opposite is true.

Across industrialized countries โ€” especially the United States โ€” the average adult already consumes well above the minimum protein required for health, even without trying. Protein deficiency in developed nations is rare and typically only seen in cases of extreme calorie restriction, eating disorders, or severe illness.

Yet somehow, protein has become the most obsessed-over nutrient of our time.

Protein bars. Protein powders. Protein cereals. Protein chips. Protein coffee. Protein water.
Weโ€™ve turned one macronutrient into an entire industry.

And hereโ€™s the strange part:ย  The U.S. already consumes more protein per person than almost any other country on Earth.

On average:

  • Americans consume ~100โ€“120 g of protein per day
  • Most European countries average ~70โ€“90 g
  • Many long-lived populations (Okinawa, Blue Zones, Mediterranean regions) average ~50โ€“70 g

Yet Americans also have:

  • Higher obesity
  • Higher heart disease
  • Higher diabetes
  • Higher cancer rates

So clearly, more protein โ‰  better health.


๐Ÿ›๏ธ Why We Became So Obsessed With Protein

I believe part of the reason protein is treated like a magic nutrient is economic, not biological.

The meat, dairy, and agribusiness industries are some of the largest lobbying forces in the U.S. government. Collectively, they spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year influencing food policy, dietary guidelines, school lunches, military meals, and public messaging.

That doesnโ€™t mean protein is โ€œfake.โ€
It means the emphasis on protein is heavily amplified compared to other nutrients like fiber, phytonutrients, or micronutrients โ€” which donโ€™t have billion-dollar industries behind them.

And after having become very ill from seeing the realities of the Big Pharma industry, I personally tend to follow the money whenever the government is aggressively pushing something as a โ€œneed.โ€

Not fearfully โ€” just realistically.


๐Ÿฅ— Speaking from Experience

Throughout my adult life if people heard I ate โ€œvegetarianโ€, โ€œraw foodโ€ or โ€œvegan,โ€ the first thing they say โ€” without fail โ€” happened to my husband and me just recently:

โ€œWellโ€ฆ you canโ€™t get any protein that way!โ€

I just looked at him, rolled my eyes, and thought, yep, here it comes again.

Honestly, I get it. From the time we are small children, we are told over and over:

โ€œYou have to eat meat because your body needs protein!โ€

But hereโ€™s the thing โ€” protein comes from so many sources beyond meat.

And if you really want to blow someoneโ€™s mind, just point out:
some of the biggest, strongest animals on the planet donโ€™t eat meat.

Gorillas. Elephants. Cows.
All plant eaters. All massively muscular.

Even cows โ€” the very animal we eat for protein โ€” donโ€™t eat protein from animals.
They get it from grass.

Makes you think, right?


๐Ÿ“ The Bodyโ€™s Real Fuel: Glucose First, Protein Second

This part is critical and rarely explained correctly:

The human body runs primarily on glucose, not protein.

Glucose fuels:

  • The brain
  • Red blood cells
  • Nervous system
  • Muscles during activity
  • Cellular metabolism

The best whole-food source of glucose?ย  >> Fruits and other carbohydrate-rich plant foods.

Protein is essential for:

  • Tissue repair
  • Enzymes
  • Hormones
  • Immune function

But protein is not a primary fuel source.
If you donโ€™t eat enough carbs, your body will literally break down protein (including muscle) to make glucose โ€” which is inefficient and stressful.

This is why fruit is not the enemy.
And why โ€œhigh-protein, low-carbโ€ diets often feel terrible long-term.

If your diet is low in fruit and whole carbohydrates, your body will literally burn protein (including muscle) just to manufacture glucose โ€” which is inefficient, stressful, and completely unnecessary.

๐ŸŽ What the U.S. Actually Says About Fruit

Official U.S. guidelines (USDA / MyPlate):

  • Minimum: 2 cups of fruit per day
    (โ‰ˆ 4 servings)

But hereโ€™s the important part:

That recommendation is widely considered a bare minimum, not an optimal intake โ€” and itโ€™s also designed around a processed food population, not whole-food eaters.

In longevity research and whole-food circles, a more realistic optimal range is:

  • 6โ€“12 servings of fruit per day
    (especially for active people, women over 40โ€“50, and anyone focused on metabolic health)

Which aligns perfectly with everything we just covered about glucose being the bodyโ€™s primary fuel.

Protein deficiency is rare.ย  Glucose deficiency is what people feel every day.


๐Ÿงฌ How Much Protein Do We Actually Need?

Most healthy adults need far less protein than you think.

๐Ÿช‘ Sedentary / Lightly Active

  • 0.8โ€“0.9 g per kg bodyweight
  • ~0.36 g per pound
  • 150 lb person โ†’ ~55โ€“60 g/day

This is enough for:

  • Organ function
  • Muscle maintenance
  • Hormones
  • Immune system

  • 1.2โ€“1.7 g per kg
  • 150 lb person โ†’ ~80โ€“115 g/day

This is for:

  • Regular exercise
  • Resistance training
  • Cardio
  • Fitness lifestyles

Important clarification:
Most moderately active people are closer to the LOW end of that range (around 80 g), not the high end.

May benefit from the upper end โ€” but even here, very little evidence supports going beyond ~1.7 g/kg.


๐Ÿ”„ What Happens to Extra Protein?

Your body cannot store protein like it stores fat or carbs.

Excess protein:

  1. Is broken down in the liver
  2. Nitrogen is excreted as urea
  3. The remaining carbon is:
    • Burned for energy
    • Or converted into fat if calories are high

So, no โ€” eating more protein does not mean:

  • More muscle
  • More metabolism
  • More fat loss

It just means more work for your organs.


๐Ÿง  Amino Acid Pooling (This Is Huge)

Your body maintains a circulating pool of amino acids in blood and tissues.

That means:

  • You donโ€™t need protein at every meal
  • You donโ€™t need perfect combinations
  • You donโ€™t need animal protein for completeness

As long as you eat enough over the day, your body:

  • Stores amino acids temporarily
  • Recycles them
  • Builds what it needs when it needs it

Seeds, beans, grains, nuts, vegetables โ€” and yes, meat if you eat it โ€” all contribute to the same pool.

Your body doesnโ€™t care where the amino acid came from.
It only cares that itโ€™s available.


๐Ÿฅฉ โ€œBut Meat Protein Is More Digestibleโ€ฆโ€

This is the one legitimate advantage meat eaters can point to.

Animal protein has slightly higher digestibility scores.

But what that really means is:

  • You might absorb 90โ€“95% instead of 85โ€“90%

Thatโ€™s it.

On the flip side, plant proteins come with:

  • Fiber
  • Antioxidants
  • Phytonutrients
  • Lower saturated fat
  • Better gut health
  • Lower inflammation
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Lower heart disease risk

So yes โ€” meat may be slightly easier to digest.
But the advantage is small, and it pales compared to the metabolic benefits of whole plant foods.


โš ๏ธ Downsides of Chronic High Protein

Especially from animal sources:

  • Kidney workload
  • Dehydration
  • Calcium loss
  • Kidney stones
  • Displacement of fiber
  • Higher LDL cholesterol
  • Increased heart disease risk

Protein itself isnโ€™t evil.
But excess protein + low fiber = metabolic disaster long-term.

Outdated.

Many plants are complete:

  • Soy (tofu, tempeh, edamame)
  • Quinoa
  • Buckwheat
  • Amaranth
  • Hemp
  • Chia
  • Spirulina
  • Nutritional yeast

And even โ€œincompleteโ€ plants still contain all essential amino acids, just in different proportions.

Your body pools them.
It balances them.
It builds what it needs.

If you eat meat, I respect thatโ€™s your choice.

But please donโ€™t:

  • Fear fruit
  • Skip vegetables
  • Avoid carbs
  • Think fiber is optional

Even if meat stays in your diet, you still need:

  • Fiber
  • Phytonutrients
  • Antioxidants
  • Whole plant foods

Meat can provide protein.
It cannot provide metabolic protection.

  • ~80 g protein

Itโ€™s also important to be honest and balanced:

In some climates and regions of the world โ€” especially colder environments where fruits and plants were scarce โ€” humans historically relied more heavily on animal foods for survival.

But in tropical and temperate regions where fruits, roots, seeds, and plants were abundant, early humans evolved primarily as foragers, not hunters.

Archaeological and anthropological evidence shows that:

  • The earliest human diets were largely plant-based
  • Meat was opportunistic, not dominant
  • Human anatomy (teeth, jaw, gut length) aligns far more with frugivores and omnivorous plant-eaters than with carnivores

In other words:
Humans can eat meat.
But biologically, we were never designed to require it in large amounts โ€” and certainly not in the hyper-concentrated, industrial quantities we consume today.

Protein is important.
But it is not the star of human biology.

The real hierarchy:

  1. Calories (energy)
