WHAT IS A GICLEE?
Definition: a printmaking method using an ink-jet printer for photographic images of paintings to produce high-quality reproductions; also written giclee. Example: In giclee, the ink is sprayed on to your choice of media in millions of colors utilizing continuous tone technology, retaining all the fine detail of the original.
Etymology: French `sprayed ink'
A high quality fine art giclee print will look almost identical to the original painting. Often times many can not differentiate between an original and a giclee print unless it is inspected from very close up. We are proud to to share the fact that we have received rave reviews on the Keck line of fine art giclee prints from art collectors world-wide, from L.A., to New York, to Paris, France.
The images below are pictures of two of Keck's fine art giclee prints on 1.5" deep gallery wrapped canvas. Gallery wrapped canvas means that the image of the work actually wraps around the edges of the canvas to give it a finished, contemporary look. Keck Fine Art Publishing also offers giclee prints on paper as well as on a thinner 3/4" canvas. Each listing throughout michelkeck.com will let you know if you are viewing a giclee print on paper, on 3/4" canvas, or on 1.5" canvas. Please note that every open edition giclee print on michelkeck.com that is shown on paper or 3/4" gallery wrapped canvas can also be printed for you on the deeper 1.5" canvas for an additional fee. How We Create The Keck Fine Art Line of Giclee Prints:
We use only the finest, large-format printers, archival quality inks, and fine art canvas and paper for the production of our giclees. Keck's entire line of fine art giclee prints (both canvas and paper giclees) are printed on professional, Epson 9600 and 9800 large-format giclee printers. Epson's latest wide-format printers represent a level of technology unprecedented in Epson's history. The breakthrough new 8-color ink technology used in our Epson printers results in a final print of uncompromising quality.
IMAGE CAPTURE: How the original painting's image is captured is of the utmost importance to what quality giclee print you will receive. Keck's original paintings are shot with a Hasselblad H1 digital back camera, and Pro-Foto lighting system to ensure that we've taken every step possible to give Keck collectors the highest quality fine art giclee possible.
Our giclees on gallery wrapped canvas are on the highest quality stretcher bars available. All of our fine art giclees are hand-stretched.
When purchasing a giclee please know that there are posters, prints and giclees. Also, within the giclee category, giclees can be produced using a variety of different inks, canvases or papers, and even lower quality and higher quality stretcher bars when ordering giclees on canvas.
Giclees can vary in costs depending on a wide variety of factors. Some factors include; whether or not the giclee is a limited edition or open edition. And, if it is a limited edition a smaller sized edition would cost more than a larger sized edition.. i.e. 1/200 or 1/1000. Some artists will hand embellish giclees to increase the value, though there are some instances when a cheaper print is hand embellished and sold to the customer as a fine art giclee, so do your homework on giclees and ask the seller plenty of questions. They should not mind explaining to you everything in full detail.
The main difference between inexpensive giclees and more expensive giclees, outside of the edition factor, is how they are photogpraphed and prepared for digital file, as well as the material (inks, canvas or paper) used.
If you are ever in question about purchasing a giclee online or offline ask the seller questions such as...
what type of giclee large format printer they are using
what types of inks they are using
how many dots per inch
what type of stretcher bars they are using
how the work was photographed or scanned for the digital file
and how the digital file was prepared.
ORIGINAL ART VS. GICLEE PRINTS
Original art, when it is art that is not mass produced, as many online companies are doing, is always a better choice for the collector who is purchasing original art for investment purposes. But be wary when purchasing original art online from any online site or 'artist' if they show pictures of a painting and then state that they will duplicate that painting for you. As a collector you should already know that if you are spending your money for an original painting (even if the price is cheap), that it means you should be purchasing a one of a kind painting. No art buyer should ever consider purchasing a so-called original when you see it stated anywhere that a 'similar' original painting can be created for you. This is always a red flag and you should steer clear from those web sites. Please also note that more often than not those type of mass production art web sites (even if they claim only one artist is doing all the work) are usually guilty of copyright infringement. Often time these sites have stolen the images of professional, full-time artists and are illegally reproducing these popular artist's work. While these art sweatshops used to operate mainly from China, the are now also operating out of Canada and the United States as well.
Museum-quality, artist-signed, fine art giclee prints, such as those produced by Keck Fine Art Publishing will also always hold a greater investment value than a mass produced original painting from an 'art sweatshop'. Be wary of any site that makes such statements as; 'original paintings not a print of any kind', when they are also a site that is showing images of paintings and saying they can created a similar original painting for you. Museum quality, fine art giclee prints are well respected, purchased, and collected in the art world, even by the most discerning art collectors & dealers!
